Our research is focused in four areas.
01
Trauma
Exposure to traumatic events can affect mental and physical health. We study the impacts of trauma, including posttraumatic stress symptoms, with a focus on understanding the lived experiences of women, Queer and gender diverse people, and people experiencing homelessness.

Injury
Our physical health affects our psychological wellbeing and vice versa. We study various types of intentional and unintentional injuries, including traumatic brain injury (TBI), non-suicidal self injury (NSSI; also called self-harm), and suicide.

Marginalisation
We study ways in which marginalised groups, including people experiencing homelessness and those who have been historically oppressed, are impacted by systemic inequalities and discrimination. Our work sheds light on the experiences of individuals who are often excluded socially and economically.

Equity
We believe that every person has the right to access mental healthcare that is inclusive and culturally safe. We explore factors that influence access to mental health services and that may support better outcomes, including higher education curriculum innovations. We also study gender equity in academia.

Using Photovoice to Explore Determinants of Health among Homeless and Unstably Housed Women
We used Photovoice, a community-based participatory action research method, to explore the health-related concerns, needs, and behavior of women who are homeless or unstably housed. Participants demonstrated resourcefulness, creativity, and hope as they strived toward health improvement.
